Local people changing the face of Arthur's Hill, Cruddas Park, Rye Hill and Elswick

Big things are happening in the West End of Newcastle - and it's all led by the community.

Centre West is an ambitious programme which has taken over from New Deal for Communities, after ten years working to change the face of Arthur's Hill, Cruddas Park, Rye Hill, and Elswick.

New Deal initiated over 100 projects to tackle the big issues that matter in every community. That includes working for a healthier future, for better homes to live in, and a more attractive environment.

Just as importantly, it includes helping people into jobs and helping local businesses to grow, cracking down on crime and helping to raise standards in education.

But making a difference in the present is not enough: we want to ensure that life carries on getting better in the West End long after our ten years' Government funding comes to an end in 2010.

That means investing in assets to make sure our community has its own income - money that can help to pay for future regeneration work in the West End.

It also means working with major service providers like the Council, Police and health service, to ensure that local people can continue to have a voice in the decisions which affect our lives. Find out more about our plans for the future here.

That's why we reinvented ourselves as Centre West – a charitable company with a community vision. A new kind of organisation to keep the community in charge, and keep the changes coming after our Government funding ends next year.

New Deal has made a real difference. Now it’s time to move forward together as Centre West.

Centre West is backed by the Department for Communities and Local Government - but this is no ordinary Government programme. With twelve elected residents forming the majority on our Board of Directors, the community is firmly in the driving seat.

Other priorities include Early Years (in partnership with Sure Start Westgate), Children and Young People and our Community Regeneration Team, which helps residents to identify local issues affecting their neighbourhood and find solutions for them.
